On August 6, 2025, Queensland experienced a significant teachers’ strike, the largest in over a decade, with around 50,000 educators walking out across 1,266 state schools. This bold collective action highlights critical challenges facing our education system and the urgent need to support those who shape our future.
The strike was driven by several pressing issues:
Inadequate Pay: The government’s proposed 8% wage increase over three years was widely viewed as insufficient, potentially placing Queensland teachers at the lowest pay bracket nationally. Fair remuneration is vital not just for teachers’ livelihoods, but for attracting and retaining passionate educators.
Mounting Workload and Burnout: Increasing administrative demands and growing class sizes are stretching teachers thin, impacting their wellbeing and, ultimately, the quality of education children receive.
Safety in Schools: Rising incidents of violence and harassment have left many teachers feeling unsafe, an untenable situation that requires immediate attention and systemic solutions.
Resource Gaps: Especially in rural areas, schools are grappling with inadequate facilities and support, further hampering educators’ ability to deliver quality learning experiences.
The Power of Solidarity and Community
Thousands of teachers marched in Brisbane, their chants echoing a firm commitment to public education. Students joined in solidarity, holding signs that read “Support Teachers” and “Fix the Teacher Shortage,” showing that this movement is not just about pay or conditions it’s about protecting the heart of our communities.
Leadership and the Path Forward
While the Education Minister has acknowledged ongoing negotiations, the steadfast position of the government has left many feeling unheard. The Queensland Teachers’ Union has made it clear that this strike is just the beginning if meaningful change is not achieved.
This moment serves as a crucial reminder: supporting educators means investing in the wellbeing of entire communities. As a wellbeing facilitator, I see firsthand how burnout and stress can diminish the incredible impact teachers can have and why creating sustainable, respectful work environments is not optional, but essential.
Looking Ahead with Hope and Action
The strike calls on us all; leaders, parents, and community members to champion systemic change. Let’s advocate for fair pay, safer schools, and better resources. More importantly, let’s commit to a culture that values and nurtures the wellbeing of educators, ensuring they can continue their vital work with joy, energy, and purpose.
Together, we can help shape a future where teachers feel respected, supported, and empowered because when educators thrive, so do our children and communities.
